How to read the table
“Local date” is today's date in each country's capital or main business centre, so for a few hours each day some countries are already on tomorrow and others still on yesterday. A holiday shows in red; a normal working day in green. Weekends are shown as weekends unless a holiday falls on them. For China, a Saturday or Sunday that has been turned into a working day under the official arrangement is marked as a working day.
The countries are the English-speaking countries and the largest economies people most often plan around: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, Singapore and the Philippines, plus China, Germany, Japan, France, Italy, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico, Spain and the United Arab Emirates.
Where the dates come from
Holiday rules — fixed dates, “first Monday of May”, Easter-based dates, substitute days and lunar festivals — are computed by the open-source holidays library and frozen into this site when it is built. We compared the 2026 lists with official sources: the UK government's bank holiday list, Japan's Cabinet Office calendar, China's State Council notice for 2026, India's central government holiday list and the Philippines' Official Gazette. Each country page links to its official source; use that before you book travel or schedule staff.
Questions and answers
Why does a holiday start before midnight where I am?
Each country's holiday runs from midnight to midnight in that country. Christmas Day in New Zealand begins at 11:00 UTC on 24 December, which is still the morning of Christmas Eve in London. The table checks every country in its own time zone.
What does “day off in lieu” mean?
When a holiday lands on a weekend, many countries give the next working day (or the Friday before) off instead. The holiday itself and the replacement day are both listed, so you can see which date the celebration is and which date offices close.
Why are some dates marked “estimated”?
Islamic holidays such as Eid al-Fitr follow a lunar calendar that starts each month when the new crescent moon is sighted. Countries confirm the date only a day or two before, so the dates listed are calculated in advance and can move by a day.
Do you include regional holidays?
Not yet. Each list keeps to holidays that apply across the whole country (for the UK, England and Wales). Regional days such as US state holidays, German state holidays or Spanish local festivals are mentioned on each country's page but not counted.
Which countries have the most public holidays?
Among the 20 covered here, in 2026: Philippines (20 dates), India (18 dates), South Korea (18 dates). The fewest: Mexico (7) and Canada (5). Counts depend on what each list covers; Canada's, for example, includes only the five nationwide days.
Can I get this data as JSON?
Yes — /api/holidays?country=JP&year=2026 returns a year, and /api/next-holiday?country=JP the next one. See the API page.
For reference only. Holidays change: governments declare one-off days off for elections, funerals or sporting wins, and lunar holidays are confirmed late. Check the official source for anything that matters.
