Capaldi: Doctor's Regeneration Isn't 'Straightforward' - Geek.com

The BBC last week released another look at the upcoming season of Doctor Who, teasing what appears to be an early bout of regenerative power coming from the Twelfth Doctor’s hand.

Lead actor Peter Capaldi in January announced his impending retirement from the TARDIS, but the Scotsman is still the Doctor “for a long time.”

According to tradition, the 2017 Christmas special will see the regeneration of the character into its 14th incarnation. So why, then, is the space-and-time-travelling alien already changing?

The tease is likely a false alarm; after all, it is possible for the process to fail.

Don’t expect a straight answer from the BBC, showrunner Steven Moffat (also on his way out after season 10), or Capaldi, who recently told The New York Times that he knows “what’s going to happen” to his character.

“There’s this notion now that [the Doctor’s regeneration is] the same process he’s gone through every time, and that’s not true,” the 58-year-old said. “It’s only the last couple of regenerations that have been, as it were, fairly straightforward ones.

“I can’t go into the details of a lot of it, because I know what happens, but I don’t know how it happens,” he added.

Capaldi’s Doctor is the first in a new cycle of 12 regenerations, granted by the Time Lords at former companion Clara Oswald’s behest. So it’s entirely plausible that this character’s evolution operates differently than before.

In the meantime, the Twelfth Doctor—with new mate Bill Potts—is staying busy with Mondasian Cybermen, Ice Warriors, emojibots, Daleks, ghostly monks, and two variants of childhood frenemy, the Master.

Bill, brought to life by newcomer Pearl Mackie, has “no understanding and no knowledge” of time travel, aliens, or roving plunger-armed monsters, Capaldi explained to the Times.

“She’s just someone who has great potential, and the Doctor thinks that potential is not being realized, and decides it would be fun to help her,” he said.

Doctor Who returns to screens (large and small) on Saturday. Season 10 premiere episode “The Pilot” has been described as an ideal starting point for those just entering the Whoniverse—including Mackie.

“It’s good, because Pearl is not particularly an expert on Doctor Who, so everything is new to her, as it was to her character,” Capaldi said. “It meant that she wasn’t bringing any baggage to it.”
