Jordan Peele May Direct Akira Live-Action Movie -

A live-action Akira movie has been an on again, off again project at Warner Bros. for years. However, the latest attempt to bring Katsuhiro Otomo’s manga to the silver screen may have one of Hollywood’s hottest new director’s at the helm. According to Tracking Board, industry insiders say that Warner Bros. is looking to have Jordan Peele take the helm of the project.

Peele is still basking in the success of his directorial debut, Get Out, which grossed $150 million off of a less than $5 million budget. That sort of success would be appealing to Warner Bros. who has attempted to get an Akira movie off the ground several times with no success. The latest try almost made it into production and would have had House of Wax director Jaume Collet-Serra at the helm and would have starred Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart.

The latest iteration of the Akira live-action movie is being produced by Appian Way, known for its success with films starring company founder Leonardo DiCaprio, and Producer Andrew Lazar. The current script was penned by Marco Ramirez, though if Jordan Peele is brought on tradition dictates that a new director has the right to make their own pass over the script before it’s finalized.

The deal is far from a lock, in fact, Warner Bros. and Peele haven’t commented on it at all yet. However, it makes sense enough to seem very plausible. Peele has already proven he can get huge returns on a small investment, and Warner Bros. may be looking to get more bang for their buck after years of incurring losses on failed Akira productions.
