Japan is already home to some pretty bizarre and yet totally delicious treats. The latest ice cream flavor, Häagen-Dazs’ mochi ice cream, is one of the weirdest out there. But it’s supposed to be super yummy, too. I’m not sure I can get past its looks, which are a little squicky. The ice cream itself is a little sticky and stretchy, just like the delicious mochi candy in Japan. This means when you’re spooning through it, you can pull it into shapes and let it make little sculptures. Weird, right?
The mochi flavor is popular on its own, but there’s a new flavor in the form of sesame walnut mochi ice cream as well. It went on sale on February 28, and RocketNews24 had some brave souls that went and gave it a try. The ice cream just hit store shelves, and it was ripe for the taste-testing.
Opening up the ice cream, you’re greeted with an extremely dark sauce on top of the mochi ice cream. It looks nearly black, and it’s a black sesame sauce with mochi-laden ice cream with white sesame paste mixed into it. There are also big chunks of walnuts to crunch into and enjoy as well. You can see how it might be a little strange, especially if you’re not sure about or familiar with either taste.
It may not look very appetizing, but when the two elements mix together, they make an interesting-looking amalgam of ice cream and special topping. It might be a fun thing to try if you’re ever able to pick up one of these tasty treats, it might be an exciting trip for your taste buds. If that’s not enough, consider trying one of the other Japanese varieties Häagen-Dazs has released, like azuki bean ice cream or Matcha Green Tea Crumble.
