Stay on target
Amazon Prime is about to unleash a Studio Ghibli television series on us and it’ll be the first kids show ever released by the iconic studio.
Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter is a 26-episode series based on the Astrid Lindgren (Pippi Longstocking) book of the same name. As you would expect from the title, Ronja is the young daughter of a robber. Over the course of the story, she comes to learn what that means after meeting Birk, the child of a rival tribe. Together, the two explore a forest full of mystical creatures and learn about the values of family, loyalty, and friendship.
Amazon released a trailer for the show on Tuesday, which shows off some expected elements from a Ghibli production: fluid animation (although it becomes obvious that the studio did the animation mostly digitally), bright colors, whimsical creature designs, and nature-filled backgrounds full of detail. You can see for yourself below.
The series was directed by Hayao Miyazaki’s son, Gorō Miyazaki, who previously worked on another book adaptation for the studio: Tales from Earthsea. He also directed From Up on Poppy Hill back in 2011. It’s a joint production between Ghibli and Polygon Pictures, best known for Knights Of Sidonia and Transformers Prime. It was released in Japan in 2014 to great critical acclaim and a couple international animation awards under the name Sanzoku no Musume Rōnya.
Hmm, other reasons to watch…it’s being narrated by Gillian Anderson. Just putting that out there.
We’ll be the first to admit that we wish the show’s animation wasn’t mostly computer-generated. It’s also unclear if Amazon will release the show with original Japanese audio and English subtitles. Regardless, we’ll be checking this out. It’s a Studio Ghibli television series! No matter your age, it’s easy to enjoy a Ghibli story, even if it isn’t directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter premieres Jan 27 on Amazon’s streaming service.
