We Finally Get Our First ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Cast Member: Michelle Yeoh | Television | Geek.com

It’s been so long since they announced Star Trek: Discovery and so far we haven’t heard a thing about the cast. That is, until Tuesday.

Producer Nicholas Meyer confirmed that Michelle Yeoh, most known for her role in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, has been cast in an unknown role.

“I know Michelle Yeoh is in it,” Meyer said, although he didn’t elaborate on her role.

Speculation by other news sites states that Yeoh could be the lead, although that is unconfirmed. We do know that the lead will be a female lieutenant commander, who will be the highest-ranking member on the ship. Bryan Fuller, who was showrunner before stepping down in October, had stated that he wanted the cast to be racially and sexually diverse. Despite her role, Yeoh, who was born in Malaysia and is of Chinese descent, would certainly add some color to the cast.

Yeoh, 54, is also a total badass. She’s a trained ballet dancer and has used those skills in her martial arts films, often doing a lot of her own stunts. Even in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, which was released on Netflix this year, she was doing a lot of her own wire work.

Yeoh most recently starred in the Netflix original series Marco Polo and the sci-fi film Morgan

Here’s hoping we’ll get some more cast announcements in the near future.

Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on CBS in May 2017. Then the rest of the episodes will air on the CBS All Access subscription streaming service.
