John Romero approves of Quake on Unreal Engine 4 | Games | Geek.com

Ever since Epic Games made its Unreal Engine 4 available to the public, many folks have taken it upon themselves to update the graphics of several classic games with the engine. Ocarina of Time, Knights of the Old Republic, Metal Gear Solid, Mario 64, Half-Life 2, and BioShock are just some of the games we’ve seen fans overhaul using this robust engine.

The latest game to get the fan-made Unreal Engine 4 spit and polish is Quake. This project is being undertaken by a company called UE4Arch, which specializes in “creating and pushing forward hyper-realistic virtual creations that can be experienced in virtual reality.”

According to the video’s description, the folks at UE4Arch are recreating the entire E1M1 map from Quake during their spare time. They have no intention of making money from this endeavor (not that they really could anyway) — they’re doing it purely for the fun of it.

As you can see from the video, the results are pretty spectacular so far. Anyone who remembers old-school Quake is sure to appreciate what is being done here. This is so impressive that even John Romero, legendary co-founder of id Software and creator of Quake, was floored by the results and shared his thoughts on Twitter.

Wow, this looks great! https://t.co/fBGHneSjqV

If John Romero himself is telling you that your Quake recreation “looks great” then you know you’re doing something right. At this point, we don’t know when this project will be finished or if there will ever be a playable version of it. Even if all we ever get is just a video of the map, that will be good enough. Who knows, maybe this project will motivate id Software into bringing Quake back the way it did Wolfenstein and Doom.
