Which Nexus 5 case is the best? | Android | Geek.com

Update: 12/23: In what will likely be the final update to this post we’ve added more cases from Cruzerlite, most importantly the Cyanogenmod TPU case and the Bugdroid Circuit Intelligent wallet. The Cyanogenmod case is, well, Cyanogenmod so it’ll be a hit with Android superfans and then the Intelligent is a wallet-style case. These are becoming increasingly popular as they are a great way to protect a smartphone’s display, add storage space, and class up your handset a bit. At $20 the wallet seems like a easy pick if you don’t mind flipping that cover back about 500 times a day.

Update 11/25: Finally, we’ve had some movement in the quest for the best Nexus 5 case. The big news is that the official Nexus 5 bumper case is available on the Google Play store. Unfortunately it’s sold out in black and red — clearly the best colors. The good news is that it’s available in yellow and grey, which we haven’t tested yet but look to be pretty handsome. The LG QuickCover case is available now as well, but it’s still $50. It’s available in both black and white.

Also, we’ve added two new Nexus 5 cases to the list. Noreve crafts its products out of leather, making these the first luxury Nexus 5 cases we’ve added to the list. Expect to pay close to $75 for them though.

Update 11/19: There hasn’t been as much Nexus 5 case news as we originally expected, so at this point Nexus owners are largely stuck with the options outlined in the article below (and viewable in the gallery above). One new case did become available, the i-Blason, which is outlined below.

At this point we still prefer the stock bumper case from the Google Play store, despite its $35 price tag. As it’s not available yet, we recommend you pick up a Cruzerlite Experience for $13 from Amazon.com if you are looking for the best Nexus 5 case that you can buy.

Original story: The Nexus 5 is only $350 but doesn’t mean you should let it leave home unprotected. No matter how much Gorilla Glass you cover your smartphone in, anything this thin and packed with cutting edge componentry shouldn’t be dropped directly onto concrete or tile. That’s where a good case (or cover) comes in.

While the Nexus 5 is quite affordable (for an unlocked phone) its cases come in a wide range of prices. The premium s0ld-on-the-Play Store cases go for $35 and $50 while third-party cases on Amazon are almost all under $15.

The Nexus 5 officially landed at Android fans’ homes this week, but neither of the official cases — the Nexus 5 bumper and LG’s QuickCover — are available yet. That’s too bad as these seem like they will be the nicest cases for the phone, at least for the time being. Or they might not be a factor at all, given how they cost 3-5x what no-name/minor-name alternatives will run you.

Here is the potential list for the best Nexus 5 cases as of today:

  • LG QuickCover for Nexus 5 – $50
  • Nexus 5 bumper case: $35
  • Ringke Fusion Google Nexus 5 – $8.99
  • Spigen Google Nexus 5 slim – $8.99
  • Spigen Nexus 5 slim armor – $25
  • Spigen Nexus 5 Neo Hybrid – $30
    Spigen Ultra Hybrid – $25
  • Cruzerlite Spi-Force – $12.90
  • Cruzerlite Experience – $12.90
  • Diztronic matte case – $9.90
  • Caseology matte slim fit flexible hybrid – $5.52
  • Tudia Ultra Slim Melody TPU bumper protective case – $9.90
  • i-Blason case with clip and kickstand – $12.95

The good news is that, unlike the Google and LG case, everything else is available right now. Most are sold through Amazon, so you could potentially have your new Nexus 5 case at your doorstep as soon as tomorrow and spend under $20 (at least if you are a Prime subscriber).

It’s still early days for the Nexus 5, so we can be sure that more cases will come out and at least some of the usual players — not just the Spigens and Diztronics of the world — have products on in development.

It’s too early to deliver a definitive verdict but the official Nexus 5 bumper is one case we have used and liked. As such this $35 Nexus 5 case is our recommendation for now. The bumper is thin, light, designed specifically with the Nexus 5 in mind by a company that actually had access to it, and fully accounts for the camera bump, speakers, headphone jack, flash, and other components. Plus, it might not fully come out in pictures , but the colors are quite interesting. It’s available in red, yellow, grey, and black.

The red bumper case we tested is a really cool tone — it’s sort of pinkish and neon — and weighs only 23 grams. It has a soft touch texture that is reminiscent of the palmrest of a newer laptop. Finally, the Nexus 5 logo on the back is just visible enough that people can see it and know you have a cool phone, but there is no texture to it — it’s like a permanent shadow on the back of the case.

Cruzerlite is often one of the first out of the gate with cases for new phones, with a heavy slant towards Android for most of their designs. The company’s Experience case has a unique pattern on the back of the phone that was styled after the custom back Google provided their employees for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The design sits on the back of an otherwise standard TPU molded case, which is the same stuff they use for most of their other designs.

The case itself is sturdy everywhere but near the volume rocker, where the cut out removes just enough support that it makes the whole left edge more flexible than it should be. The Nexus 5 slips in and out of the case easily enough, and the corners have enough support to them that it’s clear the case would do a good job protecting the phone.

Cruzerlite has the case available in 11 different colors, and for $12.90 with the option to ship via Amazon Prime, it’s a great case that looks very nice in red.

One of the newer cases to arrive for the Nexus 5 is the i-Blason Google Nexus 5 case by LG Prime Series. The name is absolutely insane, and the product looks like a the Batman utility belt of mobile phones cases, but if you want a lot of tools in one product, this delivers. The case is $13 and has a built-in kickstand and a belt clip.

The big selling point to this case is that it uses a ruggedized, two-layer design. The outside is hard plastic while inner sleeve is made of a soft silicone. We haven’t tested this one out yet, but it’s looking like the two layer design will make this the most protective of the Nexus 5 cases released so far.

If you are in the market for a luxury Nexus 5 case, you might be interested in the Noreve Tradition (pictured right) or the Tradition B. These are leather cases so expect a higher price tag than the standard silicone/TPU offerings. The Tradition B has a flap on the front so you can fully protect your display and have room to slide in a few credit cards as well.

The downside of these, of course, is the price you’ll have to pay for the leather. The Tradition B sells for 54.99€ (about $75) while the Tradition is 49.99€. Each is available in a huge range of colors though, so you’ll at least get something unique.

Noreve’s Nexus 5 cases are available directly from the company  and will be sold through Cases.com in the future.

Which Nexus 5 case is the best? | Android | Geek.comHere is another cool Nexus 5 case that we just found out about: the Cruzerlite CyanogenMod case. This TPU case sells for $15 and, based on the pictures, it’s rather handsome in a transparent sort of way. And, of course, the big selling point here is that you get to show off that Cyanogenmod logo, lending instant street cred to your smartphone (especially if your phone is actually running CM).

In earlier versions of this article we featured other Cruzerlite cases — namely the Spi-Force and the Experience. Those are still fine options, but since then the case manufacturer has greatly expanded their lineup with much more colorful and interesting models. Some of the highlights include the playful Ghostdroid Girl, the colorful Andycircuit, the mind-bending Archan designs case, and this classy wallet-style case with a built-in front cover.
