Samsung’s forward march into the wearable industry has yielded multiple generations of smartwatches and several hints that the company is working on something akin to the Oculus Rift, but today they are showing off a pair of smart earbuds designed to stay connected to you even when music isn’t playing. They are called the Samsung Gear Circle, and if they work even half as well as Samsung claims then these could be some of the coolest earbuds on the market.

Bluetooth earbuds are nothing new, but for the most part they aren’t particularly comfortable to wear all day long. LG offers a solution that places a bracket on the back of your neck, but the experience is still more than a little awkward. The Gear Circle has a pair of rigid points at the front and back of the device, but the rest of it is all standard audio cable.

The lump at the back, which rests on the back of your neck, contains a 180mAh battery Samsung claims will offer 9 hours of audio playback and 11 hours of talk time. The front, where the earbuds are, magnetically snap together to form the circle. That means when not in use they sit on your neck securely.

Samsung has added a vibration motor into the Gear Circle, so the device doubles as a notification buzzer. If you get a phone call, the front part will buzz to let you know. The sides of the earbuds serve as touch controls when playing music, allowing you to swipe for track changes and volume controls. As a result, there’s only one physical button on the earbuds and no icons to indicate command areas, so the earbuds also have a nice clean look to them.

Starting in October, you’ll be able to find the Gear Circle in Samsung retail locations as well as through their online partners. There’s no mention of pricing yet, but given the cost of similar devices you can expect to pay upward of $80 for the blue or white versions that will be available.
